Born July 30, 1944 in the Bavarian City of Prien (Chiemsee).

School and Studies(Law and Economics) in Cologne and Freiburg.

From 1973, professional career in the German Diplomatic Service. Professional experiences in Bonn (German Foreign Ministry), Dakar (Senegal), Brussels (NATO), Copenhagen, Athens, Geneva (as Deputy Head of the German Delegation to the GATT-Uruguay Round Negotiations), working for two years in the Parliamentary Group of the Social Democratic Party in the German Bundestag.

1990 – 1995 Diplomatic Advisor to the President of the European Commission Jacques Delors, 1994 promoted to Deputy Head of the President‘s Cabinet

1995 – 1997 Assistant Undersecretary for European Affairs in the German Foreign Ministry.

1997 – 2002 Deputy Secretary General of the EU-Commission in Brussels, Spokesman of the Commission in COREPER, G 8 Under-Sherpa of the Commission for External Economic Relations.

2002 – 2006 Ambassador and Head of EU-Delegation to Japan, Tokyo.

2010 – 2013 Freelance Economic Advisor.

Since Mai 2015   President of A.I.A.C.E (International Association of Former Officials of the EU)

Speaks German (mothertongue), English and French, Japanese (little).
